Filming “Gear Wars” with Vanessa Joy & Will Cadena at Imaging USA

While attending Imaging USA, one of the top photography conferences in the country, I had the chance to collaborate once again with Vanessa Joy—this time filming an episode of her well-known YouTube series “Gear Wars.” What made this one especially unique? It was filmed on my home turf.

Vanessa’s concept for Gear Wars is simple but fun: put two seasoned photographers head-to-head using budget camera gear—and see who can create the best results. It’s a great reminder that gear matters less than skill, creativity, and adaptability.

Solo Production, Big Energy

For this particular shoot, Vanessa faced off against New York-based photographer Will Cadena, someone I’ve also had the pleasure of working with several times. They each brought distinct styles and personalities to the shoot, which made for a dynamic episode full of creativity, laughter, and artistic experimentation.

Filming solo with just a couple of cameras meant keeping things streamlined, but the final result was solid. We kept the energy high thanks in part to our fantastic model, Joy Jewel, whose professionalism and enthusiasm helped the shoot come together seamlessly.
