Outdoor Event Video and Testimonials: Human-I-T and AT&T Laptop Giveaway in Alexandria, VA
On October 10, 2026, C King Media filmed a laptop distribution at the AT&T store in Potomac Yard, Alexandria, Virginia, where Human-I-T and AT&T gave away about 250 refurbished laptops to students and families in the community. The brief was simple on paper: one camera operator, no big crew, a full event recap, and a stack of professional testimonials that could hold up in a nationwide campaign. The catch was that the whole event was outside.
The Client and the Event
Human-I-T is a social enterprise that gets devices, internet access, and digital skills training to people on the wrong side of the digital divide. AT&T supports laptop distributions like this one through its Retail E-Waste Campaign, where customers drop old electronics into recycling bins at AT&T stores and every 10 pounds collected helps put a laptop in someone's hands. Recipients were preselected ahead of time and came out to pick up their laptops in person.
What They Needed: A Single Camera Operator
Human-I-T didn't want a big production footprint at a community event. They asked for one camera op. Big crews change how people act, and when someone is picking up a laptop that's going to help their kid with school or help them apply for jobs, the last thing you want is a wall of gear and five people in headsets around them.
So it was me on camera with one production assistant. Between the two of us we covered the full event recap: arrivals, the laptop hand-offs, reactions, the speeches, and people opening their laptops for the first time. My PA handled greeting people, releases, and resets between interviews so I could stay behind the camera and keep shooting.
Event Recap Plus Testimonials for a Nationwide Campaign
The recap was important, but the testimonials were the bigger piece. Human-I-T plans to use them as part of a nationwide campaign, so they had to look and sound like a professional interview, not a quick phone clip at a busy event.
We filmed a lot more testimonials than what made it into the recap above. The recap uses a few of them to carry the story, and the rest went straight to the client's team for the campaign. Every interview got its own audio check, a wireless mic, and the same framing, so the whole set cuts together cleanly no matter which ones they pick.
Filming Outdoors: Pop-Up Tent, Generator, and Lights
The whole event was outside, so we built our own interview set: a pop-up tent, a backdrop, and our lighting kit. There was no power anywhere near where we set up, so we brought a portable generator to run the lights.
This is the part people don't think about when they plan anything outdoors, whether it's testimonials, interviews, or filming a service. Open daylight is tough. Even shade is tough. Clouds roll through, the sun goes in and out, and every few minutes the light on someone's face changes. If you just shoot in whatever light is there, one testimonial looks warm and bright, the next one looks flat and gray, and they never match in the edit.
Our fix was to bring very powerful lights and let them do the heavy lifting. Instead of reacting to the sky, we lit each person ourselves and balanced the lights against the daylight. When a cloud went by, the look held. Skin tones stayed natural, colors stayed consistent, and every testimonial looks like it was filmed on the same set, because it basically was.
A Lean Event Video Kit
Running an event with a two-person crew means every piece of gear has to earn its spot. I ran a C400 on an Easy Rig with a shotgun mic for moving coverage and natural sound, then moved to a tripod for interviews with wireless lavs on every subject. Add the two-light kit, the tent, and the generator, and that was the whole production. Small enough to stay out of the way, big enough to deliver campaign-level interviews.
Planning Event Video in Northern Virginia or DC?
If you have a community event, a nonprofit giveaway, a grand opening, or a corporate event coming up in Northern Virginia, DC, or Maryland, a lean crew can still deliver a full recap and campaign-ready testimonials. It comes down to planning: knowing where the power is (or isn't), how the light is going to change through the day, and what the footage needs to do after the event is over.
