Our Town Shenandoah Conservatory: A Behind-the-Scenes Client Success Story
A Client Success Story in Theatre Production and Photography
I had the opportunity to work with Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, to capture their production of Our Town by Thornton Wilder. This project was focused on creating strong marketing imagery that could support ticket sales, social media campaigns, and long-term promotional use.
This wasn’t just another performance capture. This was a strategic content creation project designed to elevate how the show is presented online and across platforms.
About the Production
Shenandoah Conservatory’s Our Town ran from March 26 through March 29, 2026, at the Glaize Studio Theatre in Winchester, VA. The production was directed by Kirsten Trump and brought to life one of the most iconic American plays ever written.
The play follows life in Grover’s Corners across three acts: daily life, love and marriage, and death and eternity. It strips away traditional stage elements and relies heavily on performance, emotion, and audience imagination.
That minimalism creates a powerful experience for the audience. It also creates a unique challenge for photography.
The Challenge: Capturing Acting, Not Spectacle
Unlike musical theatre, Our Town is rooted in acting. Emotion drives everything. This means the photography has to do more than document. It has to translate subtle human moments into compelling visual content. In the Glaize Theatre, I had to move through the space carefully, almost like a ninja. The audience is close. The actors use the aisles. Every movement matters. There is no hiding behind big stage moments. You are working in real time, capturing micro-expressions, eye contact, and emotional shifts.
Lighting Strategy and Technical Approach
One key challenge during the photo call was lighting the actors’ eyes properly. Catch lights are critical in photography. Without them, the eyes feel flat and lifeless. In some scenes, the existing stage lighting wasn’t enough to create that detail. To solve this, I introduced controlled artificial lighting during the photo call to enhance the catch lights without disrupting the natural look of the scene. This allowed us to maintain the integrity of the production while still delivering high-impact marketing images.

Final Thoughts
Our Town is one of those productions that reminds you why storytelling matters. It is simple. It is human. And it forces you to pay attention. From a production standpoint, Shenandoah Conservatory delivered a strong, emotionally grounded performance. From a photography standpoint, it required precision, awareness, and the ability to capture moments that are easy to miss. That combination is where the best work happens. If you're producing a performance and need content that actually helps sell the show, not just document it, that’s where we step in. C King Media focuses on creating visuals that work long after the curtain closes.
