Building Content That Actually Performs

This project out in Santa Monica wasn’t just about filming a video. It was about building content that actually works. I was brought out by Vanessa Joy, someone I’ve worked with for over a decade, across everything from weddings in New York and New Jersey to commercial campaigns and branded content. When she’s producing something, it’s not random. t’s intentional, structured, and built to perform.

This Isn’t “Content for Fun”

There’s a misconception around content creation. People think it’s casual. Something you just film and post. That’s not what this is. This is sponsored content. This is brand-backed production. This is closer to a modern-day TV show than anything else. When you’re working with companies like Adorama and Canon, there’s a standard. Everything has to be clean, engaging, and on brand.

The Concept: Budget Gear Shootout

The idea behind the series was simple, but strong. Take experienced photographers and give them entry-level or older camera gear. Then have them compete. Same model. Same environment. Different approaches. At the end, the images are reviewed and even printed to see who created the strongest result. It’s educational, competitive, and entertaining all at once.

Working With Top Talent

For this shoot, Vanessa brought in Joe Buissink as the featured guest. He’s a well-known wedding photographer and a former Canon Explorer of Light, with years of experience at the highest level. Projects like this are always a reminder of the level of people you get to work around when you’re in the right rooms. And more importantly, how important it is to be ready when you’re there.

One Shoot, Multiple Deliverables

This is where the real value comes in. From a single production, we didn’t just walk away with one video. We created:

  • The main Budget Gear Shootout episode

  • A deeper conversation and interview-style piece

  • Short-form content for social platforms

This is how content should be approached. Not one video at a time, but building a system where one shoot turns into multiple assets.
